Health For Life

The school is currently working towards achieving the Health for Life Award which has been designed to promote an environment that encourages a proactive approach to developing and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. It is also an opportunity to instil and develop core cooking skills within children.

The award is based around 3 strands. These are cooking food, growing food and physical activity. As a school we provide many opportunities in the curriculum for our children to experience cooking food, growing food as well as engaging our children in physical activity at break and lunch times using a range of PE and play equipment. The school achieves this through themed events, such as Cookathon, parent and child cooking workshops, curriculum lessons and extra-curricular activities.

Taking part in Cookathon 2024 offered children a real-life opportunity to prepare and cook food using the skills which they have acquired over time, complimenting the DT curriculum in a direct way. It Inspired our children to consider future careers in catering and hospitality, whilst experiencing healthy eating in an exciting way. Furthermore, the event promoted healthy eating to the school community and beyond.

Working in collaboration with our parents the school encourages a healthy approach to food and nutrition. Parent and child cooking workshops provide the opportunity to share positive experiences together whilst imparting key knowledge around food and nutrition. The Eatwell Guide shows how much of what we eat overall should come from each food group to achieve a healthy, balanced diet. It covers fruit and vegetables, starchy foods, protein foods, fat, sugar and salt. It also gives tips on how to get your 5 a day.

Using our school newsletters, twitter page and Adderley Voice brochures, we will keep our parents up to date with events, initiatives and activities associated with the Health for Life programme. In the meantime, please can we ask parents to continue talking to their child about their experiences of cooking food, growing food and any physical activity they partake in outside of school.

Thank you for your continued support.
