Celebrating Our Gold Award as a Unicef Rights Respecting School
At Adderley Primary School, we are incredibly proud to announce that we have achieved the prestigious Gold Award as a Unicef Rights Respecting School twice. We are the second primary school in Birmingham to achieve the Gold Award. This accolade is a testament to our unwavering commitment to embedding the principles of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) into every aspect of our school life.
What is the Unicef Rights Respecting Schools Award?
The Unicef Rights Respecting Schools Award (RRSA) recognises schools that have put the UNCRC at the heart of their ethos and curriculum. The Gold Award is the highest accolade given by Unicef UK and is granted to schools that have fully embedded children’s rights in their policies, practice, and culture.
Our Journey to Gold
Achieving the Gold Award has been a journey of dedication, collaboration, and continuous improvement. Here are some key milestones and initiatives that have helped us reach this goal:
- Rights Respecting Curriculum: We have integrated the UNCRC into our PSHEC curriculum, ensuring that pupils learn about their rights and the rights of others. This includes lessons on Articles such as:
-
-
- Article 12: The right to express their views and have them taken seriously.
- Article 28: The right to education.
- Article 31: The right to relax and play.
-
- Pupil Participation: Our pupils play an active role in the decision-making processes of the school. Through our Pupil Ambassadors and various pupil-led initiatives, we ensure that their voices are heard and valued.
- Community Engagement: We have fostered strong partnerships with parents, local organizations, and the wider community to promote and protect children’s rights. This collaborative approach has been instrumental in creating a supportive and inclusive environment.
- Staff Training: All staff members have received comprehensive training on children’s rights and how to uphold them in their daily interactions with pupils. This has helped create a consistent and rights-respecting culture throughout the school.
- Celebrating Diversity: We celebrate the diverse backgrounds and cultures of our pupils, promoting an inclusive environment where every child feels respected and valued.
The Impact of Our Gold Award
The impact of achieving the Gold Award is evident in the positive atmosphere and strong sense of community at Adderley Primary School. Our pupils are more confident, engaged, and aware of their rights and responsibilities. They are empowered to make a difference in their school and beyond.
