HONOURING THE UN CONVENTION ON THE RIGHTS OF THE CHILD
We held our latest ‘WE Day - Day of Inspiration’ as part of our progressive approach to personal development and cultivating the leaders of tomorrow.
We were privileged enough to have a very special visitor, the Lord Mayor of Birmingham, Cllr Raymond Hassall, who was really impressed with the school and told children that they were the politest, best-mannered children that he had ever met!
Amongst the guest speakers were Billie Dunne and Carl Konadu from We Schools (part of Free The Children/WE Day UK). Billie Dunne inspired the children to be active citizens as she told them the story of her life, having to support her own mother with cancer at a very young age and then starting off her own charity. The children were left feeling highly motivated and truly empowered that they can make a difference in the world.
Carl Konadu, a motivational speaker who travels up and down the country talking to young people about having high aspirations, was extremely impressed when he discovered that at Adderley we teach “The 7 Habits of Happy Kids” across the curriculum.
Carl is passionate about youth development and has worked with the Safer London Foundation and the British Youth Council as an ambassador and trustee, working towards bettering the lives of young people through building links with decision makers. He gave a very motivational speech in which he inspired children to aim high in life.
The Lord Mayor also took to the stage and gave the children advice that they would utilise in years to come. In a motivational speech he told them “the only thing that will stop you from achieving is yourself”.
He had a tour of the school, led by the Junior Strategic Leadership Team, celebrated the children’s successes and told them that they were the “future of this city”. He took part in some Bhangra dancing with the children and thoroughly enjoyed his visit.
The ‘Radio Adderley’ pupil leaders managed to grab an exclusive interview with the Lord Mayor, which can be viewed on the school website.
Our children have earned their tickets to WE Day UK at Wembley Stadium on 9th March. This will be our second visit after hosting a Youth Summit at the school last year. The event will bring together tens of thousands of young people to celebrate a year of action that transformed communities and changed lives.
