The Four Areas of SEND

The SEND Code of Practice identifies four broad areas of Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND): Communication and Interaction, Cognition and Learning, Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH), and Sensory and/or Physical Needs. These categories help schools understand and respond to the different barriers that children and young people may experience in their learning and development. At Adderley Primary School, we recognise that every child is unique and that some pupils may have needs across more than one area. Our provision is tailored to individual strengths and needs, ensuring that appropriate support, adaptations and interventions are put in place to help every pupil succeed.

At Adderley Primary School, early identification is a key part of our inclusive approach. We use a range of information to identify pupils who may require additional support, including teacher observations, ongoing assessment, discussions with parents and carers, pupil voice and, where appropriate, advice from external professionals. We recognise that children develop at different rates and carefully monitor progress, attainment, communication, behaviour, wellbeing and engagement to identify any barriers to learning. By working closely with families and professionals, we can ensure that support is provided at the earliest opportunity and is tailored to individual needs.

Measuring the Impact of SEND Provision

We regularly review the effectiveness of our SEND provision to ensure that it is having a positive impact on pupils’ outcomes and experiences. This evaluation includes consideration of academic progress, attendance, engagement in learning, emotional wellbeing, independence, participation in wider school life and progress towards individual targets and outcomes. We value the views of pupils, parents, carers and professionals and use this feedback to help shape and improve our provision. Through the Assess, Plan, Do, Review process, we ensure that support remains responsive, effective and focused on helping every child to belong, participate, achieve and thrive within our school community.
