Adderley Primary School is now an accredited supporter of the Outdoor Kids Sun Safety Code, a fantastic nationwide sun awareness and protection initiative.
Devised by the Myfanwy Townsend Melanoma Research Fund, the Outdoor Kids Sun Safety Code (OKSSC) is partnered with the Youth Sport Trust, the Association for Physical Education (AfPE), the Child Protection in Sport Unit and sports coach UK. Following its launch in 2014, the Outdoor Kids Sun Safety Code has increased its support to over 80 national governing bodies and outdoor activity groups.
The scheme has been designed to tackle melanoma, one of the UK’s most common cancers in young people, by helping to develop and support sun protection practices for all those who work outdoors with children. Just a few serious sunburns can increase everyone’s risk of melanoma by 80%. With 86% of melanomas attributed to excessive sun exposure, and levels of melanoma rising in the UK, sun protection habits need to change.
Adderley Primary School has created a Sun Protection Pledge, which will be promoted and endorsed at all our outdoor events, as well as through our direct delivery of PE and Sport in Schools.
By raising awareness of the risks of prolonged sun exposure and educating young people on the importance of sun safety, we aim to further promote lifelong participation in health promoting activity.
If you are a group or individual that works with children outdoors, why not get OK accredited? Simply register at www.oksunsafetycode.com, read the ‘OK Guidelines’ and then select actions from a pre-formatted checklist to create your ‘OK Sun Pledge’; a tailored sun protection policy suitable for your activity and resources.
Together we can help blow the whistle on Sunburn!
